You Are What You Eat: How Food Affects Our Focus, Energy and Confidence
Have you ever noticed how some foods give you energy and you literally feel better and refreshed to get through the rest of your day? While other things you eat seem to suck up all your energy and make you feel sluggish or tired? That’s because food has a bigger impact on your health way beyond your physical appearance. The phrase, “You are what you eat” is not just a cliché. It’s really true.
So today, let’s look at foods that give us energy versus the ones that drain our attention and focus. Then let’s have a heart-to-heart about a few things we know we should be doing – such as drinking more water – that can help improve our overall health. Foods That Drain Our Energy, Focus
Foods That BOOST Our Energy, Focus
|High Sugar Foods: Candy, cookies, sweets||Sugar from Whole Foods: Fruit (dried, baked, raw)|
|Simple Carbs: Juices, junk foods, chips
|Complex Carbs: Whole grains, high-fiber cereal, green vegetables, apples, pears, berries, legumes (lentils, beans), peas|
|High Fat Foods: Breaded & fried meats and vegetables, butter, french fries
|Low Fat, High Protein Foods: Skinless turkey or chicken, fish, lean pork or beef, nuts, beans, peanut butter (these are also rich in protein which is a great energy booster)|
|Stimulants: Caffeine*||Water, protein shakes|
*A Note About Caffeine: I know we love our coffee, but you may want to consider switching to decaf because caffeine only gives energy for a short period of time, which can drain you when it leaves your system. It also dehydrates you, so if you do drink coffee, drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated.
Everyday Healthy Choices That Can Boost Your Focus, Energy and Confidence
Drink More Water. Water hydrates, purifies and levels out your energy. The first thing I reach for when I feel a little sluggish is a glass of water.
Cut Out Bad Fats, Increase The Good Ones. Fats can be tricky because our bodies actually need fats for healthy digestion. But some fats are good and some are bad. Bad fats come from butter, cheese and high-fat red meats, which are high in saturated fats. Good fats include fats from avocados, vegetable oils, nuts and fish, which are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. (Source)
Limit Sugar. Sugar is also tricky because it is in almost everything. The way to limit sugar is to avoid processed foods. Sugars from whole foods are good for you, but you’ll want to eat balanced meals throughout the day so all your foods and nutrients work together.
Eat More Greens. Greens are good for you because they are rich in vitamins and fiber. Dark green leafy vegetables are best. If you do cook them, steam them with water until tender. If you’re not getting enough greens or if you want to add greens to your diet but just don’t like the taste, consider the It Works! GREENS supplement. It’s jammed pack with vitamins, nutrients and fiber of greens and taste great in your favorite shake. Click here to learn more about GREENS.
