Studies have proven that the better we feel about ourselves, the more confident we are and we see ourselves in a more positive light.
Simply put, how you feel about yourself affects every single area of your life. If you are not happy with you – I’m not talking about your things or your situation – I’m talking about you, your mind, body and spirit – if you are not happy with who you are, it will be hard to be positive about anything. The thing to remember is you are the only one that you can control, and since that is the case, you can instantly create a better situation for yourself simply by changing your focus. Like we discussed in Part 1, rather than focusing on the negative, start focusing on the positive.
Here’s a quick exercise to help you learn to think more positively about yourself.
Take the next 5 minutes and write down at least 5 things you like about you – there are no wrong answers here and feel free to be as generous as possible. Your list can include ANYTHING you like about yourself – go for it and don’t hold back.
If you come up with more than 5 terrific! Keep writing until you feel like stopping. There’s no right or wrong answer. Ready…Go!
Things I Like About Me…
How did you do? Was it hard? Easy? If it was hard for you to come up with 5 things you like about yourself, don’t be discouraged. This exercise was designed to help you get to the point where you start thinking more about who you are as opposed to who you are not. It is also a chance for you to pause from all the “stuff” going on around you and help you reflect on no one else but you. If you’re honest, when is the last time you did that? I know it can be hard, especially if you have a spouse and even children, but from time to time, it is important to press pause and self-reflect.
Take some time to be honest with your feelings about yourself. This will help you get closer to accepting and appreciating your value and what you bring to life’s table. Your confidence about yourself matters because you matter.
So the next time a negative thought comes to mind – and it will, or the next time someone says something negative to you – and they will, Remind yourself of what you know to be true: As long as you like you, you don’t need to rely on the opinions of others to be who you are!
