What it really takes to be successful in direct sales
Have you considered working with a direct sales or network marketing company? Before you decide to join, consider these insider secrets or as I refer to them, my true confessions of a network marketer…
Confession #1: We Love Working With People
Without a doubt, network marketing is all about working with people. Nothing happens in this business until you speak to someone about what you’re doing and learn from them if your product can help them. Even as we use social media and the internet to connect with people all over the world, we still have to take a genuine interest in getting to know people if we’re going to be successful. I will be the first to say, if you don’t like working with people, networking marketing probably is not for you. From introducing people to our products to working with new team members, building relationships will be key to your success. No, you won’t have to always be around people – introverts rejoice! – you will want to have strong people skills like communication, follow up, and quite frankly, patience, in order to grow a business in direct sales.
The main reason people refer to businesses like It Works and other direct sales companies as “network” marketing is because it involves making a connection with individual people, and from that one person, you meet people they know who introduce you to people they know, and before you know it, you have expanded your sphere of influence beyond just you and your initial connection. That’s the power of people. And it all begins with one!
Confession #2: Network Marketing Works If You Work It
I can’t tell you how many people start a business and quit because they thought they would experience overnight success. It’s simply not how this works. Running a business takes work, time and resources. There is no such thing as overnight success, however, when you learn the basic system for growing your business, you can see results quickly. The problem is, quickly isn’t always long-lasting. That’s why it is key to not only start a business that can help you earn a good income, but also make sure you have a system in place that works. This is also why network marketing is becoming the fastest-growing type of self-owned business.
When you work with direct sales/network marketing companies, many of them already have a system in place that has been proven to work. What you’re looking for is a company that has been in business long enough to show that not only does its system work for short term results, but it also works for long term growth and development. When the system works, you’ll see several people who have achieved success and not just a few of the same people. You’ll want to look at the company’s compensation plan to see whether the company pays well whether you decide to build a team or not. This is key because you want to have flexibility in how you earn money with that particular company, and be paid well for promoting a particular product or service.
Here’s the key to success with network marketing: Even with the best system for earning income, the system only works if YOU do the work. So if by adding just 4 loyal customers and 2 team members you earn a guaranteed $500 bonus, the only way for you to actually receive the bonus is by sharing your products with enough people so that 4 of them become loyal customers and at least 2 of them join your team. I know I sound redundant, but the point is, success comes to those who go to it. It’s not hard to earn money with direct sales, but you do have to know the system and put your time in to see results.
Confession #3: We Love Making Our Own Hours
Yes, we work hard in direct sales, but it’s so worth it when you realize you don’t have to log hours or a time card. We also don’t have anyone telling us what time we can leave work or whether or not we only have a few sick days or a few days of vacation. Nope. When you run a direct sales company — and it’s not running you! — you get to put in your own hours and as you’ll see in Confession #4, you get to write your own paycheck. Sure, there may be times when I work weekends or maybe even get up a little earlier to keep track of my business, but I do that when I want to. I don’t work late nights – I like to be in bed by 9. I have “technology free” days. I take vacation when I want. But without a doubt, I do work, and I do hustle. But on my terms and based on how and when I want to work. This is indeed one of the pleasures of owning your own business. However, just like we already confessed, network marketing does take work!
Confession #4: There Are No Income Limits
Another benefit of working in direct sales is there are no income limits. For every level you achieve, you can earn more and more money. Just because you reach a certain level, doesn’t mean you have a cap on your income. This is why network marketing businesses are one of the few kinds of businesses where you get to write your own paycheck. You get paid based on your efforts and there is no glass ceiling. Everyone is on equal playing field. There is nothing stopping anyone from earning more money and achieving income levels they’ve never dreamed of. With companies like It Works that promote debt-free lifestyles and rewards is executives with generous bonuses, you can see why people who succeed in direct sales are so passionate about their business.
